Nonprofit View: It’s time to step up against sexual assault

One in 6 women and 1 in 33 men will experience sexual assault in their lifetime, according to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN). In Maryland, 1 in 8 women will be raped in their lifetime. An estimated 1,773,000 women in Maryland are victims of sexual violence other than rape in their lifetime. Additionally, an estimated 441,000 men in Maryland have experienced sexual violence other than rape in their lifetime, according to the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Sexual violence, including rape, is under-reported, so these statistics represent a fraction of actual incidences.

For the last 40 years, Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County has served the community with both educational and victim services. For the last 10 years, RCIS has held our annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes men’s walk, during sexual assault awareness month, every April.
